Moi Renee

  • Moi Renee immigrated to Philadelphia from Jamaica in the 1970s.

  • He moved to New York City in the early 80s after high school to pursue dance.

  • While studying at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in the early 90s, he was also starting to gain popularity as a regular performer at clubs like The Shelter, Midtown 43, Tracks, One Hot Spot, and Better Days.

  • In 1992, he releasedMiss Honey,” one of the first ‘bitch tracks’ of its kind.

  • Flanked by two background dancers, Moi performed “Miss Honey” on The Sybil Bruncheon Show on the public access Gay Cable Network after the song’s release.

  • Moi was found dead in a hotel room in 1997. Following an investigation, his death was ruled a suicide.

  • Beau McCall, one of his friends, disputes this and alleges he heard Moi was murdered. Telling Queerty in 2022, “He just did not possess that in his personality. Suicide would be the last thing that he would attempt to try to do to himself, so I have a hard time believing that.”

  • Beyoncé sampled “Miss Honey” on “Pure/Honey” on her 2022 album, Renaissance.

  • She even paid homage to Moi, donning a green wig and singing next two to backup dancers in a scrapped music video for the song.

  • Brandon Nicholas is currently working on a documentary about Moi and crowdfunding to help finish the film.
